Caring For Your Fur-Baby
Don’t overfeed your baby: No, it is not cute that Atlas is overweight. German Shepherds have a breed standard. Unless you have an unusually large dog, the standard is a good guide. Many dog owners believe bigger is better. Also, for some reason we fear underfeeding our dog. A German Shepherd Dog should be lean.
If they have energy, do not excessively shed, don’t have a strange odor, don’t have overly flaky skin, and are just lean, that is great. Their hips joints are finite in terms of use, and being overweight reduces the longevity of their joints.
Don’t leave dogs with things near them they can injest: Like tennis balls, the glue on normal tennis balls erodes the enamel on dogs’ teeth. No cooked bones of any kind. If their chew toy breaks apart, take it away. These pieces can become lodged in their bowels as an obstruction. Sharp pieces can lacerate the intestines resulting in bleeding and even death. Watch out for styrofoam packing peanuts. They are toxic. Also, remember that Antifreeze can be sweet and deadly to your dog.
Never leave your dog tied to a tree or post with a choker on the live link: They can easily wrap themselves around the post and strangle themselves.
Don’t use the “knee” correction for jumping up. It's better and safer to “block” the nose, cupping your hands and letting them run into it. Or have someone hold their leash and yank back as the jump up. Your fur-baby needs plenty of clean, fresh water to stay healthy, hydrated, and cool. Make sure they have all that they need.
